Revising for GCSEs can feel overwhelming. Not only are you juggling multiple subjects at once, but each subject comes with multiple different papers, different content styles and a lot of content to understand and remember.
On top of all of this, knowing where to start and how to find the proper revision tools can be confusing.
Fortunately, there are excellent, completely FREE Revision Tools available online. These platforms will provide clear topic summaries, worked examples, practice questions and past papers. When utilised correctly, they can significantly boost your confidence, technique and overall grades without ever costing a penny.
Offering videos, walkthroughs, and 5-a-day question practice! These are great tools to help build the foundation of understanding in specific topic areas in Maths, such as Pythagoras or Tree Diagrams
CorbettMaths is great for daily question practice and consolidating the method behind answering certain questions. However, it is limited to just Maths, and the interface is simplistic. The harder questions are limited, and hence, after a certain point it becomes difficult to practice more questions
PMT offers past papers, topic notes, revision packs and flashcards across almost every GCSE subject there is! Physics and Maths Tutor is excellent for exam-style practice and offers a huge collection of past papers with mark schemes.
There are a few drawbacks to consider though:
This website offers short summaries, quizzes and animations. It’s great for initial learning and quick revision. Helps when you have been using past papers for a while and just want to check you understanding through a short quiz.
BBC Bitesize isn’t great for students who want to push for grades 8s and 9s and offers less practice content than other websites. Our Tutors are great in helping students push for the top grades, as through one-to-one practice and support, we would know exactly what the student’s weakness is and how to push them to achieve more.
This platform offers free interactive revision courses with memory-based recall for a wide range of GCSE subjects. With fun, quick revision sessions, progress can be tracked and strengths and weaknesses can be assessed and targeted. Its game-like structure, instant feedback and colourful visuals make revision fun and manageable, especially for students who struggle to stay focused. The progress tracking feature allows students and parents to see which topics are secure and which need more attention, making it easier to plan targeted revision rather than revising everything at once.
However, whilst the core content is free, some of the higher-level and grade 8-9 material is locked behind a paid Premium upgrade. Additionally, since the questions are quick and fast-paced, there is a risk that students may just click through the answers without fully processing the information, limiting deeper understanding.
Seneca works best when used alongside more thorough note-making or past paper practice, rather than as the only revision method.
When revising for GCSEs, Khan Academy can be a very useful supplementary tool. It will strength the graps of concepts in maths and sciences, and to fill gaps in understanding.
However, to get the most out of it, pair it with resources that are specifically aligned to your exam board (for example, past papers, board-specific revision websites) and use a structured plan (like our SmartX Revision Planner). Be aware, there may be differences in terminology or exam style and so you should adjust accordingly.
As the website is so open, students need a good plan and discipline to use it effectively – it doesn’t provide students with structured revision guides or a schedule.
Many students begin GCSE revision with good intentions, but quickly become overwhelmed because they don’t know how to organise their time across subjects and exam papers. This leads to common problems:
Without a clear schedule, revision becomes inconsistent and stressful.
The SmartX GCSE Revision Planner solves this problem by breaking revision down into manageable weekly and daily plans, helping students balance subjects effectively across the academic year. It provides structured guidance on how many hours to spend per subject at different stages of the year, from early learning and making notes to practising past papers closer to exams. It also includes a daily printable timetable layout to map out revision blocks clearly. By following the planner’s staged approach (e.g. 1-2 hours per subject per week earlier in the year, increasing to focused daily rotations during exam season), students build a strong understanding first and then sharpen exam skills at the right time.
Free revision tools are incredibly useful, though many students still struggle with staying consistent, knowing exactly what to revise next and fully understanding the harder topics on the specification.
One of our success stories, Hazel, mentions that staying consistent and having a disciplined structure to revision goes a long way. She progressed from 3s and 4s to straight 9s and 8s at GCSEs through the help of revision planners and personalised, one-to-one SmartX Sessions.
